Exclusive: Jason Smith Hails ‘Homecoming’ as MI Cape Town Bring Him Back to Newlands
31-year-old all-rounder Jason Smith makes a heartfelt return to Cape Town with MI Cape Town for the upcoming SA20 season. Back at Newlands, where he started his cricketing journey, Smith is excited to play alongside Proteas legend Hashim Amla and old teammates. The opening Boxing Day fixture promises a perfect blend of nostalgia and opportunity for the talented cricketer.

Training day MI Cape Town with Jason Smith
For Jason Smith, the upcoming SA20 season represents more than just another chapter in his professional career — it is a heartfelt return to where it all began.
The 31-year-old all-rounder is back in Cape Town, the city of his birth, after being signed by MI Cape Town. Educated at Wynberg Boys’ High, Smith’s journey through the cricketing ranks saw him represent South Africa at age-group level before progressing to the South Africa A side.
After moving from Western Province to the Dolphins in Durban, Smith now finds himself back on familiar turf, having previously enjoyed a brief stint with MI Cape Town during the inaugural SA20 season.
“It is a bit of a homecoming for me,” Smith said.
“Playing at Newlands, which is probably one of the best venues in the world — there is no better place to play cricket. It’s obviously a privilege to come back home and represent MI Cape Town. I’m extremely honoured.”
SA20 Pick-Up
Smith’s return to Cape Town was sealed at the SA20 auction, where MI Cape Town secured his services after head coach Robin Petersen backed the versatile all-rounder.
Known for his contributions with both bat and ball, Smith brings valuable balance to the reigning champions’ squad.
“To be honest, I didn’t watch the auction — I was busy with a four-day game at the time,” Smith admitted.
“There was of course a lot of excitement, and when my name came up, I didn’t know what to expect. I’m glad Robbie [Petersen] put the paddle up for me.”
Picking the Brains of Legends
While Smith joins a squad filled with new faces and international imports, it is the opportunity to work closely with Proteas legend Hashim Amla that excites him most.
“Someone I’m really looking forward to working with is Hashim Amla,” he said.
“I’ve played with him but never had the opportunity to work with him as a coach. I’ve played with most of the guys in the squad, so in many ways it’s more of a reunion.”
Smith also rekindles long-standing relationships with former Under-19 teammates Kagiso Rabada and Corbin Bosch.
“I’ve played with KG and Boschy from our South Africa U19 side. It’s good to reminisce about the good old days.”
Boxing Day Feel Returns
Boxing Day cricket is deeply woven into South Africa’s sporting culture.
While the country will miss out on a traditional Boxing Day Test this year, SA20 has seized the moment, with MI Cape Town set to face Durban’s Super Giants at Newlands in the opening fixture.
“I’m extremely excited for the first game,” Smith said.
“There’s one stadium that always brings in a great crowd and great vibes, and that’s Cape Town. Boxing Day, there’s no better place to have that first game than at Newlands.”
For Smith, the occasion promises to be a perfect blend of nostalgia, opportunity, and unfinished business — a true homecoming on one of cricket’s most iconic stages.
