The family of South African footballer Jayden Adams has declined to comment publicly on the circumstances surrounding his passing, asking for privacy while they grieve.
According to family spokesperson Brendine Johnsons, the family was informed by Adams' father.
"The information about the passing of Jayden came from his father. He gave me a call in the morning and told me Jayden is not going to make it. Initially I didn’t understand what he meant, and then he informed us that Jayden has passed," Johnsons said.
Johnsons added that Adams' father later informed other family members.
Reserved Personality Highlighted
During the FIFA World Cup, Adams' quiet and reserved demeanour attracted attention on social media, with some supporters commenting on his body language in behind-the-scenes footage.
However, Johnsons said Adams had always been a private individual who preferred to stay out of the spotlight.
"Jayden from a young age was generally very quiet and never liked to be seen by cameras. He never wanted to be in the limelight and was always reserved from a very young age."
He added that Adams also experienced the loss of his grandmother during the World Cup but maintained that his reserved nature was consistent with his personality rather than an indication that something was wrong.
Investigation Ongoing
Johnsons said the family would not speculate about the circumstances surrounding his passing, noting that an investigation is underway.
"At this moment in time, I don't think any of us can say what the real cause was. It is still a shock to us, and there is still an investigation that needs to be done. So we can't give a direct answer in terms of what was the cause or what happened."
He added: "We have no suspicions; nobody picked up anything. My responsibility as a family member is to protect his legacy. I cannot give additional details on it."
At the time of writing, the family has asked for privacy while the investigation continues. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the circumstances surrounding the reported incident.
The family has confirmed the funeral will be held on 25 July 2026.
