Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sipho Ndzuzo believes his former side are starting to overcome their unusually slow start to the campaign, with recent displays under coach Miguel Cardoso indicating that the champions are gradually regaining their rhythm and authority.
The Brazilians have not enjoyed the commanding start that has defined them in recent seasons, finding themselves pushed harder than usual in the Betway Premiership title race.
With only a narrow gap separating them from Orlando Pirates, signs have been pointing to a strong end to the season.
The turning point
Back-to-back statement results helped ease the pressure on Cardoso and his troops.
A crucial 2-1 away victory over Pirates was followed by a 1-0 win against AmaZulu, and most recently a convincing 3-1 triumph over Sekhukhune United on Sunday, reinforcing the belief that the champions are regaining their cutting edge at a pivotal stage of the season.
Speaking exclusively to SportsBoom.co.za, Ndzuzo acknowledged that early experimentation within the squad disrupted the team’s usual fluency.
“Mamelodi Sundowns have definitely started this league season differently compared to the dominant, fast-starting side we’re used to seeing."
“In previous campaigns, Sundowns would impose themselves from match one, controlling tempo, possession, and results with confidence and consistency. This season, however, the momentum seemed disrupted.”
“Coach Miguel Cardoso made several changes early on, rotating combinations and experimenting with personnel."
“While squad evolution is necessary, too many adjustments at once can cost rhythm. The foundation is there, now it’s about making a clear statement on the pitch.”
The return of the trademark Sundowns style
Following the loss of some key players and new arrivals, Sundowns needed time to build new combinations and re-establish cohesion, a process that briefly unsettled their trademark control of matches.
“The team needed time to understand new partnerships, and in that process, they lost some of the sharp focus that usually defines them.”
“Lately, though, there are strong signs that Sundowns are turning the corner. The influence of Surprise Moriri working closely with the president seems to be bringing renewed stability and identity.”
“The team is returning to its trademark style, confident build-up play, better positional discipline, and improved decision-making in the final third. Most importantly, the players look like they are regaining belief.”
Beyond domestic ambitions, the CAF Champions League remains a major objective.
Having lifted the continental crown in 2016 and fallen short in last season’s final, the Brazilians will be determined to reassert themselves on the African stage. Balancing league commitments with continental demands will test the squad’s depth and mental resilience.
New signings laying down their mark
Cardoso will also be encouraged by the immediate impact of recent additions.
Former Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng made his debut in the victory over Sekhukhune United and contributed with an assist, while striker Brayan Leon has quickly established himself as a reliable goal threat with six goals in nine appearances.
“Monnapule Saleng made an immediate impact in the recent match, providing an assist and showing promising chemistry with his teammates."
"His ability to combine quickly and create space can add an important attacking dimension if he maintains the consistency.”
“The new striker, Brayan Leon, appears to be a natural finisher. His role is clear: to convert chances. If he can also deliver consistently in front of goal, he could become a crucial piece in Sundowns’ pursuit of silverware.”
“With the quality and depth available, expectations are high for Sundowns to be competitive in the CAF Champions League."
The squad has the talent and experience, now it’s about mental strength, tactical clarity, and consistency when it matters most.”
Ndzuzo also cautioned that the title race remains finely poised, despite Sundowns’ experience at this stage of the season and their run of eight consecutive league titles, particularly with Pirates showing such consistency this term.
“At the same time, Orlando Pirates are playing strong football and look focused. This season feels tougher, more competitive, and more intense."
"Pirates will not make it easy, and Sundowns must rise to that challenge if they want to reclaim dominance.”
