Exclusive: Finidi George Returns Home to Rebuild Rivers United

In a move that sent shockwaves through the Nigerian football landscape, Finidi George, the former Super Eagles winger, was unveiled as the new coach of Rivers United. 

The former Super Eagles’ manager was unveiled last month, June, as the new manager of the PortHarcourt-based club after their long-standing manager Stanley Eguma was sacked by the management.

The new terrain is the second Nigerian premier club side, which the 53-year-old legend will be managing in the space of three years since returning to his country.

In an exclusive interview with SportsBoom.com,  Finidi George revealed the reasons behind his decision to join Rivers United, a choice that surprised many who expected him to return to his former club, Enyimba.

Finidi's playing career is the stuff of legend. A pacey and skillful winger, he was a key member of the Super Eagles team that won the 1994 African Cup of Nations. He also had successful stints in Europe, playing for clubs like Ajax, Real Betis, and Ipswich Town. After retiring from playing, Finidi went on to earn his coaching badges and has since gained valuable experience, one of which was winning the NPFL league in 2023.

The gaffer, who has preferred to keep quiet about his short spell with the national team that spanned barely a month, said the new job was a moment to test new ground.

A New Chapter Unfolds

The new chapter for Finidi is at his hometown club, where he began his career as a youngster of 17 in the early 90s’. The former Super Eagles' winger began his footballing career as a player for the Sharks of PortHarcourt who merged to become Rivers United. He said his return was to rebuild.

But while it was important to relive his boyhood moment, Finidi reiterated that it's more than memories and that the club required his service.

When asked why he chose Rivers United over Enyimba, a club where he had previously enjoyed success as a coach, Finidi's response was emphatic.

Finidi, during his coaching spell with Enyimba, had an average win rate of over 55%, which puts him in a better position to help the Port Harcourt landlords to the continental spot next season.

"Like I said, Rivers United is one of the biggest clubs in Nigeria and West Africa. I think it's a new chapter for me, and I like the challenge. I want to help the club grow and become a dominant force in Nigerian and African football.”

"I'm happy with the project the club is looking at, and I see a lot of potential for growth and success. The vision of the club aligns with my own ambitions, and I believe we can achieve great things together."

As he begins his new role at Rivers United, Finidi is determined to bring his wealth of experience and expertise to bear on the team.
