Fresh from their triumph as World Rugby Sevens champions in Bordeaux, more South African Sevens stars are set to take their talents to India’s growing Rugby Premier League (RPL).
Blitzboks veteran Zain Davids has confirmed that he and several teammates will join their respective franchises once visa arrangements and travel logistics are finalised later this week.
Speaking after South Africa’s title-winning campaign, Davids revealed that an opportunity arose immediately following the tournament’s conclusion.
“After the trophy presentation last weekend, the Spanish coach Paco Hernandez asked me if I wanted to play for his team in the Rugby Premier League. I told him yes, I would love to,” Davids told SportsBoom.co.za.
“They have sent additional information to me, and I should receive my visa within four days. I will probably join the team this weekend and begin playing in the Rugby Premier League.”
Davids also confirmed that fellow Blitzboks stars Impi Visser and Sebastian Jobb will be joining the competition.
The experienced South African forward is set to represent the Bengaluru Bravehearts as the league continues to attract some of the biggest names in international Sevens rugby.
Domestic Sevens Expansion
The Rugby Premier League, India’s franchise-based Sevens competition, continues to expand its profile on the global rugby stage.
Taking place following the conclusion of the international Sevens circuit, the tournament provides a platform for elite players from around the world to compete while helping grow the game in emerging rugby markets.
Davids believes competitions such as the RPL are crucial for the continued development and visibility of the Sevens format.
“The Rugby Premier League is good for Sevens rugby in general because World Rugby can see how important the format is,” he said.
“Rugby is for everyone, women and men, Sevens and 15s. Tournaments like these provide valuable exposure for players who may not get opportunities in the 15-man game and allow them to showcase their talent.”
With several newly crowned world champions preparing to arrive in India, the Rugby Premier League is set to receive another significant boost as it continues to establish itself as a major destination for elite Sevens talent.
