Jurenzo Julius, the Junior Springbok Player of the Year, has had a standout year both with his franchise, the Sharks, and the Junior Springboks.
With Springbok star Lukhanyo Am missing due to injury, Julius seized the opportunity to step into the centre role, impressing both coaches and fans with his performances.
His exceptional form throughout the season has him looking more and more like a future Springbok, making his dream of representing South Africa at the highest level closer to becoming a reality.
Junior Springbok Player of the Year
At the 2025 SA Rugby Awards, Julius was named the Junior Springboks Player of the Year, a well-deserved recognition for his dedication and talent.
Having represented the Junior Springboks for two seasons under the guidance of coach Bafana Nhleko, Julius' rise to prominence has been nothing short of remarkable.
Reflecting on the achievement, Julius shared: "It was never something I set in my sights [winning POTY], my goal was to be in the Junior Springboks then take it from there. It was a huge honour for me and I am extremely grateful. I worked hard to get here...things like these don't come around often. I am pleased to receive the award."
His performance on the field this year has earned him the admiration of coaches and peers alike, setting a strong foundation for what promises to be an exciting career.
Springbok Alignment Camp
Julius' exceptional performances have not gone unnoticed, earning him a spot in the first Springbok in-person alignment camp for 2025.
The alignment camp, which consists of gym sessions, boardroom meetings, and discussions about the expectations and standards of the Springbok team, was an invaluable learning experience for the young player.
"This was the first alignment camp for me with the Springboks."
"They obviously want us to be in the best condition physically and mentally. They provided me with a few tips on how to become a Springbok and for some, how to remain a Springbok. There are definitely things I discussed with the coaches, not really about my talent if I can say so, but more around hard work, effort, and being a team player," Julius told SportsBoom.co.za.
Julius spoke candidly about his discussions with the coaches, emphasising the importance of continuous improvement.
"For me personally, I need to be more precise, more accurate in all aspects of my game and basically I need to get to a world-class level to play for a world-class team [Springboks]."
Aspirations to Be a Springbok
While many young South African rugby players grow up dreaming of wearing the Green and Gold, Julius’ journey has been slightly different. Born and raised in Namibia, he moved to South Africa after primary school, where his rugby aspirations began to take shape.
"Since I have been here [South Africa], I definitely set my sights and goals that were... more short-term goals. I wanted to make the Junior Springbok squad, get my first senior cap [for the Sharks], and now it's the Springboks. And I believe it is in reach," he said, reflecting on his journey so far."
Julius’ rise from playing in the junior ranks to now being in the Springbok alignment camp is a testament to his hard work, ambition, and dedication to improving his game. His future is certainly one to watch as he continues to develop and refine his skills in pursuit of the ultimate goal of donning the Springbok jersey.
With his impressive performances on both the domestic and international junior stages, Jurenzo Julius is not just a promising young talent; he is a player who is well on his way to fulfilling his dream of playing for the Springboks. If his growth continues at this rate, South Africa may soon have another exciting talent to call upon in their quest for global rugby dominance.
