Former Springbok and current Bulls player Johan Goosen has been fighting his way back to fitness after yet another injury sidelined him for a lengthy period.
However, after a tough recovery, Goosen is eager to get back on the field and looks forward to a new challenge with the return of Handré Pollard to the Bulls.
Comeback Trail
Goosen, who earned the 2022/23 URC Golden Boot, made his comeback after a two-and-a-half-month layoff. His return to action came in the 32-22 victory over Bayonne in the Round of 16 of the EPCR Challengers Cup.
"Obviously I have been through this before and I must say it has been tough this time around. I still have a bit of pain but the coaches are managing me well," Goosen told SportsBoom.co.za.
He added that with proper management, the pain should subside in the next week or two, allowing him to regain full fitness.
"I'm just happy to wear the jersey again and get 10 or 15 minutes on the weekend. Every moment on the field counts," Goosen added with optimism.
Pollard’s Return to the Bulls
The return of Handré Pollard to the Bulls is one of the most anticipated events in South African rugby.
After spending six years playing for Montpellier and Leicester Tigers, Pollard is set to rejoin his former team, and his return will undoubtedly shake up the Bulls’ backline.
For Goosen, this presents a fresh challenge, as he will now be competing for the No. 10 jersey with Pollard. Although, Goosen is no stranger to competition and welcomes the opportunity.
"I have played with Polly [Pollard] at Montpellier for a couple of seasons. Obviously, he has won two World Cups, a good player, and a great signing for the Bulls. It's a massive positive for the Bulls," Goosen said of Pollard's return.
Goosen recognizes Pollard's immense pedigree and achievements, but he is focused on his own development and contribution to the team.
"In terms of my contract, I still have one more season left at the Bulls. I am just taking it day by day and being the best I can be for the team," he added.
A New Challenge Ahead
Goosen’s path to recovery and return to action is a testament to his resilience and determination. With the added challenge of competing for the starting spot with a player of Pollard’s caliber, Goosen knows he must remain focused and give his best performance to ensure he remains a key figure for the Bulls.
As both players prepare to battle it out for the No. 10 jersey, the competition is expected to raise the standard of play within the team and elevate the Bulls’ chances of success.
With a strong squad, including the return of Pollard, Goosen will need to be at his best to secure his place and continue making a vital impact for the Bulls.
Whether as a starter or a valuable contributor off the bench, Goosen is determined to make the most of his opportunities and help his team achieve success in the upcoming seasons. The rivalry with Pollard will only add intensity to the already competitive atmosphere at the Bulls.
