Exclusive: Lawrence Agyekum Keen on Cercle Brugge Future as Talks Continue with RB Salzburg

Ghanaian midfielder Lawrence Agyekum discusses Cercle Brugge's football environment, his potential to extend his stay with Cercle Brugge or return to his parent club, RB Salzburg. 

He shares his delight in donning the Black Stars of Ghana jersey and reveals how he has been a childhood fan of Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta.

CERCLE: AN AMAZING FOOTBALL CLUB TO PLAY FOR

Interestingly, at his young age, Agyekum has already experienced various football environments, having played for renowned clubs such as WAFA in Ghana, Troyes in France, Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, and currently, Cercle Brugge in Belgium. 

"I've been fortunate to play for a few other clubs as well. "But I must say, I've taken a liking to Bruges - the atmosphere, the club's rich tradition, and the fans' passion for their team are truly exhilarating. When I learned  I'd be joining Cercle on loan, it felt like a natural fit," he told SportsBoom.co.za. 

"I settled in immediately, thanks to the warm welcome from everyone at the club. The technical team, my teammates - everyone has been incredibly supportive, making me feel right at home. My primary focus is on playing football, and that's what drives me. I strive to make myself, the fans, my family, and all those who support me proud."

BIG DECISION IN JUNE

As his loan spell at Cercle Brugge draws to a close at the end of June, the young midfielder remains tight-lipped about his potential return to Red Bull Salzburg. 

With a crucial decision looming in the next two months, Agyekum is cautious not to make any career-threatening choices.

Since joining Cercle Brugge on loan from RB Salzburg in 2024, the 21-year-old has become an indispensable figure in the team's midfield. His impressive performances have made him a fan favorite at the Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges.

However, his future is uncertain, with little control over his stay or exit. Fortunately, Cercle Brugge has the option to trigger a buy clause in the loan deal, which could allow Agyekum to extend his stay in Bruges.

"I'm focused on my current season with Cercle Brugge," he said. 

"I'm sure they know what they want. Both Salzburg and Cercle will reach an agreement about my future. As a professional, I'll keep pushing and doing what's expected of me on and off the field. We'll see what the future holds."

Agyekum remains open to staying in Bruges for a few more months or years, but ultimately, the decision lies with the two clubs. 

"I've always given my hundred percent on the field, though there's room for improvement."

According to sources close to SportsBoom.co.za, several clubs from France, England, and Germany are interested in signing the player. However, it's believed that Cercle Brugge is likely to retain his services, with talks ongoing between the Belgian club and Red Bull Salzburg.

HISTORIC 83RD MINUTE

His face lit up with pride as he reflected on his Black Stars debut. 

"Wearing the Black Stars jersey is a dream come true," he exclaimed. "It's an honour to represent my country, and I'm grateful to Coach Otto Addo and the Technical team for the opportunity."

In the 83rd minute, Libyan fourth official Muhammad Saad Elmabrouk Elmabrouk raised the substitution board, displaying the number 15. Only one name came to mind at the Accra Sports Stadium: Lawrence Agyekum. 

The young midfielder was about to fulfill his childhood dream of playing for Ghana, replacing none other than English Premiership star Thomas Partey in front of a packed stadium.

For him, the moment was special. "I was a bit nervous, not because I wasn't ready to play, but because my childhood dream of playing for the Black Stars was being fulfilled in a special way, in front of my family and Ghanaians," Agyekum recalled. "I will always remember that 83rd minute; it's historic for me."

Agyekum is excited  to represent Ghana, his father's country of birth, despite his Nigerian roots through his mother. The young star's top priority, aside from his commitment to Cercle Brugge, is helping the four-time African Champions secure their fifth World Cup appearance in Canada, Mexico, and the United States in 2026.

He emphasizes the significance of Ghana's qualification for the 2026 World Cup. 

"Qualification is non-negotiable," Agyekum stressed. "We must make it to the World Cup. It's a massive tournament, and every player wants to be part of it. I feel blessed to be considered by the head coach, Otto Addo."

Ghana currently leads Group I with 15 points, three points ahead of second-placed Comoros in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, despite a slow start. The next round of qualifying matches is scheduled for September and November, when the Black Stars will take on Chad and Mali, respectively.

WALKING IN ANDRES INIESTA'S FOOTSTEPS

The former WAFA talisman,  has revealed that Spanish legend Andres Iniesta has been a significant inspiration for his game. 

"Iniesta is a role model for me," he admitted. "I love watching his videos and learning from his experiences. He's a true legend of the game."

Agyekum hopes to meet Iniesta one day and learn from his experiences firsthand. "I wish to meet him and have some talks," he said. "I know I have a lot to do to reach his level during his playing days."

Despite the challenges ahead, he is optimistic about his progress. "At least I'm on the right path," he added with a smile. As Agyekum continues to make waves in Belgium, one thing is clear – he's committed to making his country proud and taking his game to the next level.
