Former Ipswich Town winger Finidi George has admitted the club is struggling in their return to the Premier League but remains confident they can avoid relegation.
Narrow Loss to Nottingham Forest
Ipswich Town suffered a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest over the weekend at the City Ground, with Chris Wood converting a second-half penalty to secure the win for the hosts.
The result left Ipswich fans frustrated as their team came close to scoring twice in the first half. Ola Aina cleared a Cameron Burgess header off the line in the 23rd minute, and Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels made a crucial save from Omari Hutchinson’s shot 10 minutes later.
In an interview with SportsBoom.co.za, Finidi George, who scored eight goals in 46 appearances for Ipswich Town, expressed his belief that the club can survive the season. “It’s been a tough season for them, which is no surprise given how competitive and difficult the Premier League is," said George.
"Let’s not forget, they’re just coming back to the Premier League after spending several years in the Championship, so some struggles were always likely."
Ipswich's Current Struggles
The defeat ended Ipswich’s three-game unbeaten run and left them in the relegation zone. They now sit second from the bottom with nine points from 13 games.
Despite the setback, George stated that there is still hope: “It’s still early in the season. There’s plenty of time left, and they can’t afford to give up now. I’m hopeful they’ll fight their way to survival.”
George also commended manager Kieran McKenna’s efforts, despite the challenging results. “The manager is doing an excellent job, even if the results don’t reflect it yet. With time, I believe things will turn around. It’s a fantastic club with so much potential,” he concluded.
Finidi George joined Ipswich Town in a £3.1 million deal from Spanish side RCD Mallorca. He played for the club from 2001 to 2003, leaving a lasting impression during his time there.
