Former Nigerian international and Malmo FF forward Peter Ijeh believes that Kelechi Nwakali has a unique opportunity to revive his career with League One club Barnsley and urged the midfielder to embrace the adventure.
Early Promise and Failed Moves Abroad
Nwakali first gained international attention in 2015, leading Nigeria to victory at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile.
Named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, he quickly became a sought-after talent, signing with Premier League giants Arsenal in 2016.
However, his time at Arsenal was marred by loan spells, and he left the club in 2019 without making a first-team appearance.
Following his exit from Arsenal, Nwakali had stints with Spanish clubs SD Huesca and Ponferradina before moving to Portuguese second-division side Chaves in 2022.
His return to English football came in the summer of 2024 when he signed a three-year deal with Barnsley, a move he called "an exciting opportunity" to prove his abilities.
Despite the optimism, Nwakali has struggled to secure a place in Barnsley’s first team, making only two appearances with one assist to date.
Reports have emerged suggesting that Barnsley might consider moving him on, citing concerns about his adjustment to the team, English football and indiscipline.
Ijeh Stresses Talent and Adaptation Period
Speaking with SportsBoom.com, Ijeh, defended his compatriot, expressing confidence in Nwakali’s abilities, despite the slow start.
"His talent is undeniable, even if his journey hasn’t unfolded as planned," Ijeh said.
With the right attitude, Barnsley can help him rediscover his form and rejuvenate his career. He’s a skilled player but likely needs more time to adapt to his new teammates and the demands of English football

Discipline and Professionalism in Question
Nwakali’s career hasn’t been without controversy. Recently, he was demoted to Barnsley’s U21 squad following concerns over fitness and professionalism.
This step-down culminated in further issues when he was sent off during a match for punching an opponent. This isn’t the first time Nwakali has faced disciplinary issues. In 2022, SD Huesca terminated his contract, citing “disciplinary issues.”
Similarly, while at CD Chaves, he was publicly criticized after being seen using his phone on the bench during a match against Famalicão.
Ijeh Calls for Focus and Professional Growth
Ijeh who played pivotal role in the development of Sweden great Zlatan Ibrahimovic urged Nwakali to use these setbacks as motivation to grow as a player and demonstrate his commitment to Barnsley.
"His recent actions likely stem from frustration during a tough period, but that doesn’t justify them," Ijeh adds.
"Rather than allowing limited first-team opportunities to bring him down, he should use it as motivation to work his way back and show his value to the club.
"Discipline, strong character, and professionalism are essential now. Although violent conduct is never acceptable in football, I hope this experience serves as a learning moment for him.
From National Star to Fighting for Career Revival
Once seen as a promising future star, Nwakali has made four senior appearances for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, with his last call-up in 2023.
Ijeh stressed that Nwakali’s move to Barnsley could be an opportunity to rebuild and potentially regain a spot on the national team.
"The move to Barnsley is meant to help him grow and get back to his level, including the national team. He has to accept that and commit fully to the process," Ijeh concluded.
With high expectations and a challenging journey behind him, the coming months may prove pivotal in determining Nwakali’s future at the Oakwell.
