Do South African Bookmakers Really Offer Fair Odds to Casual Players
Many bettors think odds just show a team’s chance of winning. But there’s more happening behind the scenes. This is where the idea of 'fair odds' gets a bit more complex.
Most bettors assume odds are simply a reflection of a team's chance of winning. But there is more going on behind the scenes at licensed sportsbooks. And that's where the idea of 'fair odds' starts to become a little more complicated.
Bets vs. true probabilities: What's the difference?
Take a Springboks vs All Blacks Test match. A bookmaker might offer odds of 1.80 on South Africa and 2.00 on New Zealand. Many bettors assume those numbers are a direct reflection of each team's chances of winning.
Betting odds aren’t just made up. There is a lot of information that goes into it, like changes in line-up and the weather on match day.
The same Springboks match can have slightly different odds depending on where you look. One sportsbook might go 1.80, while another is happy to offer 1.85. One bookmaker might be happy to go a little bigger on the price than another.
Why Bookmakers Build Margins into Their Odds
If odds were based just on a team's chances of winning, there wouldn’t be much left over for the sportsbook. That's why margins (or the sportsbook's cut) are built into betting markets.
When there are matches where both teams have more or less the same chance of winning. Fair odds would be 2.0 for each team. A sportsbook is going to offer you lower than that, though, once they have built in their cut, or margin.
If you look at 1.90 vs 1.85 on a PSL match, it doesn't seem like that much. However, when you are betting on soccer matches, it is these small adjustments that help sportsbooks make money and make up for losses.

Margins also vary between markets. High-profile events such as Springboks Tests and major Premier League matches often have tighter pricing because they attract more betting activity. Smaller or less predictable markets may carry higher margins because there is more uncertainty involved.
