Is Instant EFT the Best Deposit Method?

Instant Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) is often punted by South African bookies as fast and easy, and the ability to move funds directly has its advantages. However, while Instant EFT has clear pros in terms of speed and convenience, warnings from regulators hint that calling it the best could be more fiction than fact.

Is Instant EFT the Best Deposit Method

Is Instant EFT the Best Deposit Method

In an industry already grappling with regulations, the best option is not necessarily the fastest, but rather the option balancing usefulness with security and control.

How does Instant EFT work?

The South African Reserve Bank [1] defines Instant EFT as a third-party payment method that automates the initiation of payments and provides instant confirmation for merchants. The central bank describes the process used as ‘screen scraping’, which allows third parties to access user account details and use the consumer’s screen data to facilitate payments.

The popularity of this system is based primarily on speed and real-time confirmation, particularly for betting deposits, although this convenience should not be a sole measure of quality.

Regulators, such as the Financial Sector Conduct Authority [2], warn that ‘screen scraping’ can expose user credentials and data privacy, and increase fraud and impersonation risks. Similarly, the South African Government [3] has cautioned consumers to be aware of the risks of Instant EFT online payment services when using e-commerce stores, citing the SARB.

What makes a Good Deposit Method?

How data is handled

A strong betting deposit method is not defined solely by how quickly funds appear in an account, but rather how well factors like security, compliance, and control from the start of the process to withdrawal are supported.

While Instant EFT uses banking interfaces, this remains a third-party payment model sitting between consumers and their banking provider, increasing the risk of compromised personal and account information.

Compliance with FICA

The Financial Intelligence Centre Act 38 of 2001 [1] states that betting operators must verify and identify clients effectively, meaning that faster deposits should not be isolated from the regulatory requirements.

A good deposit method should not circumvent verification: if a platform allows instant deposits without having to complete the identification process first, this can put users at risk when the time comes to withdraw.

Transparency of Payments

Another often overlooked factor is what happens after placing a bet, as withdrawals are usually processed via manual EFT and bank transfers, resulting in notable delays compared to the speed of making deposits.

While speed is often considered key, bettors should also weigh up aspects of the Instant EFT process such as privacy, withdrawal times, account verification, and confirming if a betting site has been licensed locally.

User-defined limits and Support

The quickness that defines Instant EFT services comes with significant tradeoffs, including impulse spending, through the ability to make immediate deposits, making control over spending a crucial aspect.

Other considerations include whether deposit methods are supported across major South African banks, and how bettors are supported in the case of duplicate transactions or withdrawals not reflecting.

It is worth noting that Instant EFT providers vary in their role and function, and users must understand who processes payments, who is accessing data, and what protection is in place before making a deposit.

Licensing and Regulatory Compliance

In South Africa, the National Gambling Board [1] states that online gambling is illegal unless through a bookmaker licensed in the country by one of the provincial boards, and licence details must be clearly displayed.

The NGB enforces the National Gambling Act of 2004 [2], with Section 11 permitting licensed sports betting and prohibiting interactive online gambling, which was reinforced by the national gambling body recently.

Is Instant EFT the Best Deposit Method?

Instant EFT is the method betting sites will recommend and is considered one of the strongest options because it aligns with South African banking habits and online betting behaviour. However, the ‘best’ method is the one that offers security, control over spending, compliance with regulations, reliability for deposits and withdrawals, and is licensed in South Africa.

There is a more important consideration than just speed for Instant EFT on betting sites: it is not only about how you make deposits, but also how well you are protected when doing so.
