Exclusive: Wilco Louw Powers Bulls’ URC Charge as Player of the Season Contender
Bulls prop Wilco Louw shines in URC season, nominated for Player of the Season alongside other top SA players. His dominant performances have been key in Bulls' success, including recent playoff win. Louw credits team effort for his success, carries on in memory of late teammate Cornal Hendricks.

Bulls tight head prop Wilco Louw has emerged as a frontrunner for the United Rugby Championship (URC) Player of the Season, following a series of standout performances that have anchored the Pretoria-based side’s dominance up front.
Since returning to Loftus Versfeld from English Premiership outfit Harlequins, Louw has rekindled the promise he showed during his early days with the Bulls' junior structures.
The powerful front-rower, who later honed his craft with the Stormers and earned 14 caps for the Springboks, has hit a new gear this season and South African rugby has taken notice.
URC Recognition
Last week, SA Rugby named Louw as a nominee for the South African URC Player of the Season, alongside Bulls teammate Cameron Hanekom and the Stormers' rising star Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. It’s elite company, but few would argue with Louw’s place on the shortlist after a campaign where he’s dismantled scrums across the competition.
"It is a massive honour to be nominated for Player of the Season," Louw said humbly.
"But rugby is a team sport, and without the rest of the team, the brilliant players I play with — none of this would have been possible. It’s the guys who pack in the scrums, who clean when you carry. It’s a team effort," he told SportsBoom.co.za.
While Louw deflects individual praise, pundits and fans alike have noted his brutal effectiveness in the set piece, where he’s consistently manhandled opposition tightheads and set the tone physically.
Bulls Beat Edinburgh to Reach Semis
The Bulls’ latest triumph came in a hard-fought URC quarterfinal victory over Edinburgh at Loftus, a rematch with a side that had outmuscled them earlier in the season.
"They were not an easy opposition, they are a well-coached team," Louw admitted.
"They got good dominance in the scrum the first time we faced them, and we remembered that. We also lost to them in the Challenge Cup playoffs, which was tough. So we knew exactly what they’d bring on Saturday."
The Bulls showed maturity and power in their performance, handling the pressure and raising their level in the critical moments that define playoff rugby.
Tribute to Cornal Hendricks
The win came against a backdrop of emotion for the Bulls camp, as they continued to honour the late Cornal Hendricks, who passed away tragically in May. The franchise retired the No. 14 jersey in his memory, a gesture that’s weighed heavily but inspired unity within the squad.
"Cornal was a happy guy, always positive and full of good energy," said Louw.
"He was a fantastic rugby player but an even better human being. Hopefully, we can finish the season strong for him and his family. It would be a cherry on top if we could do it for Cornal and not just for rugby, but because of the way he lived life with enthusiasm and joy."
