Dale Steyn Backs Unbeaten Proteas to Bury ‘Chokers’ Tag and Win T20 Crown
South Africa's dominant T20 World Cup campaign sees them unbeaten and in the semi-finals. Dale Steyn believes the team's unity and talent can help overcome their "chokers" label. With strong leadership and synergy, they aim to claim their first ICC T20 crown and rewrite their history.

South Africa’s T20 World Cup campaign in India and Sri Lanka has been nothing short of commanding. The Proteas have stormed into the semi-finals as the only unbeaten side in the tournament, producing consistent, high-quality performances, including a statement victory over co-hosts India in the pool stages.
Now, former Proteas fast-bowling great Dale Steyn believes this team has what it takes to finally bury the infamous “chokers” tag and claim their first ICC T20 crown.
“Everyone Has Done Their Part”
Steyn has been impressed by the collective effort within the squad, highlighting the balance between bat and ball and the ability to respond under pressure.
“They have been bloody good,” Steyn said. “Everyone has done their part. In every situation they’ve been thrown into, they’ve responded.”
He pointed to key contributions across the lineup:
David Miller delivering crucial runs.
Lungi Ngidi leading the bowling charge.
Tristan Stubbs holding his nerve in a high-pressure Super Over against Bangladesh.
Quinton de Kock anchoring the batting effort.
For Steyn, the defining feature of this campaign has been unity, a team where every player understands their role and executes it.
A Statement Win Over India national cricket team
South Africa’s dominant win over India marked a significant psychological breakthrough.
“I did have a feeling, if there was someone who would beat India it would be South Africa,” Steyn exclusively told SportsBoom.co.za.
He referenced a recent T20 series where South Africa experimented with multiple combinations and fell short. However, the World Cup brought clarity.
“Come the World Cup, we knew who our starting XI would be. And we knew exactly what we would do to them,” he said. “Proteas threw a punch they weren’t expecting.”
With both teams now through to the semi-finals, the possibility of a rematch in the final adds further intrigue.
The Perfect Recipe: Leadership and Synergy
Talent has never been South Africa’s issue. According to Steyn, the difference now lies in the harmony between players and management.
Captain Aiden Markram, head coach Shukri Conrad, and assistant coach Albie Morkel have created a strong leadership core.
While star names like Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen provide firepower, Steyn emphasized that structure and direction are equally vital.
“It’s easy to coach a team with big names,” he said. “But someone has to steer the ship.”
He likened the current environment to the winning culture at Sunrisers Eastern Cape under Adrian Birrell, where strong management-player synergy has produced consistent success.
Time to Retire the ‘C Word’?
The “chokers” label has long haunted South African cricket, a reminder of near-misses in ICC tournaments past.
But Steyn is adamant this team is different.
“I’m going to come out confidently, they are the best team in the competition,” he declared.
“It’s not bias. It just is what it is.”
He also backed young talent Dewald Brevis to rise to the occasion in a crunch match, pointing to a dressing room filled with players who have experienced success in franchise leagues and know how to win titles.
“You’ve got a bunch of winners in that changing room,” Steyn said. “Winning trophies tells you that you’re not choking.”
Unbeaten, unified and unburdened by past failures, the Proteas stand two victories away from rewriting their T20 history. If their current form continues, the narrative surrounding South African cricket may finally change, from nearly men to world champions.
