World Supercross Championship South African GP Podium Celebrations
South Africa’s growing reputation as a global motorsport destination received a major boost following a successful World Supercross Championship finale held in Cape Town this past weekend.
FIM Africa President Marco Comana praised the event and confirmed his support for the country hosting more international motorsport competitions in the future.
The historic race weekend marked the first time the World Supercross Championship was staged on African soil, a milestone moment for motorsport on the continent. According to Comana, the occasion was long overdue.
“For us at FIM Africa, it is a dream come true. We waited a long time to host an event like this in Africa,” said Comana.
“It is the first time we have had a Supercross event on the continent. Cape Town was the right idea and the ideal place.”
The iconic Cape Town Stadium served as the venue for the championship’s final round, drawing thousands of fans and delivering a world-class spectacle.
“Cape Town Stadium is probably the best stadium in Africa,” Comana added, further reinforcing confidence in South Africa’s ability to host elite global events.
Bigger Motorsport Events on the Horizon
Following the success of the World Supercross event, Comana hinted that this could be just the beginning for South Africa on the international motorsport calendar.
“The event this year was the beginning. Next year we will see other international motorsport championships coming to South Africa,” he said.
Among the most anticipated possibilities is the long-awaited return of Formula 1, which South Africa has been pursuing for several years. Current discussions suggest a potential comeback as early as 2026, with 2027 also a strong possibility.
Brad Binder Backs South Africa’s Motorsport Future
South African MotoGP star Brad Binder was also full of praise for the event, sharing his excitement about competing in front of a home crowd and expressing hope for MotoGP’s return to the country.
“South Africa is a country that loves sport in general,” said Binder.
“It was awesome to have the World Supercross Championship here for the first time—at least that I know of. I will for sure be back next year; I am a massive fan.”
Binder also emphasized his desire to see MotoGP return to South African soil.
“I’d love to have MotoGP back in South Africa. It has been a few years now. The sooner it comes back, the better.”
Wildcard Opportunity for Local Talent
The weekend also provided a breakthrough moment for South African rider Cameron Durow, who received a wildcard entry to compete against some of the world’s top riders. Durow was the only South African participant in the event, making his appearance even more special.
“It’s a huge privilege for them to pick South Africa as a host and to pick me as a wildcard entry,” Durow said. “The whole weekend I had the crowd behind me every time I went out. I’ve never experienced that level of support, especially at an international event.”
Reflecting on the broader impact of the weekend, Durow believes the event showcased South Africa’s capability to host major global competitions.
“It has been an amazing experience. Hopefully this weekend opened eyes abroad and showed that South Africa can host big motorsport events and pull in massive crowds.”
