KAIZER CHIEFS: CURRENT FORM – LDDLL

Kaizer Chiefs come into this clash in woeful form and are under immense pressure from the club’s enthusiastic fanbase aiming to arrest a six-match winless streak in the Betway Premiership.

With the majority of Amakhosi fans calling for coach Nasreddine Nabi to be sacked, while the remainder believes that proper recruitment is urgently required to give the Tunisian tactician a fair shot against the likes of perennial champions Mamelodi Sundowns and bitter cross town rivals Orlando Pirates.

The Glamour Boys have been poor on their recent travels, unable to clinch maximum points in four Betway Premiership games. They suffered three defeats at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns (1-0), Richards Bay FC (2-0), and Golden Arrows (2-1) while sharing the spoils from a goalless draw in Gqeberha against Chippa United.

Disappointingly scoring just once in four away matches would surely be an area of concern for coach Nabi and his finishers to improve on. Although, Kaizer Chiefs haven’t excelled at the FNB Stadium either with just one victory from their past six home games.

An Ashley Du Preez goal edged a (1-0) win over relegation-threatened Magesi FC while settling for a share of the spoils against AmaZulu (2-2), Cape Town City (0-0), and TS Galaxy (1-1).

They suffered a humiliating defeat against an out-of-sorts SuperSport United (1-4), and most recently loss to Marumo Gallants (1-2).

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH

  • Mduduzi Shabalala: The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has been one of the few positives to take from this season. Shabalala will aim to equal the club’s top goalscorer, Duba, on five goals this Saturday. He has been a key contributor during Kaizer Chiefs’ 2-1 wins over Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch FC with mature performances.
  • Makabi Lilepo: The DRC winger has featured prominently since the appointment of coach Nabi and is consistently improving every week. Big expectations are put on Lilepo’s broad shoulders ahead of the upcoming season following a decent return of three goals from 10 starts in the Betway Premiership.
  • Gaston Sirino: The Uruguayan playmaker has the ability to unlock defences with his vision, skill and South American flair. This hasn’t been the easiest team to settle into after leaving champions Mamelodi Sundowns with many weak areas across the pitch for Kaizer Chiefs to improve on. However, the experienced campaigner will aim to display his quality on Saturday in front of sold-out FNB stadium. Sirino has tallied the most assists for Amakhosi this season, expect the midfielder to pull the strings for any goal-scoring chances created.

KAIZER CHIEFS TEAM NEWS

Defender Dillan Solomons recently addressed his struggles with finding consistency after a spell of injuries sidelined the fullback, "It's been a difficult one. Obviously, this season I have been hit by a lot of injuries, coming back just the start of the season with the shoulder and now dealing with a hamstring problem." admitted Solomons.

"But for now, I feel healthy, I feel good. Good preparation, going every week. Not just going to training and going home, there are a lot of preparations that are going into keeping my body in good shape." he added.

First-choice centre-back pairing Rushwin Dortley and Inacio Miguel continue their race to full fitness, with Happy Mashiane and Bradley Cross attempting to fill the void. Dortley is still recovering from surgery, while Miguel has rejoined first team training.

Reeve Frosler is out of action after suffering a dislocated shoulder, while Njabulo Blom is unavailable with a groin injury leaving Kaizer Chiefs short on defensive solidarity. Meanwhile, attacking midfielder Wandile Duba accumulated his fourth yellow card of the season in the match against Marumo Gallants and will serve a one-match suspension.

ORLANDO PIRATES: CURRENT FORM – WWDWL

Orlando Pirates were on the cusp of meeting Mamelodi Sundowns in an all-South African CAF Champions League final but were undone during the final 30 minutes against Egyptian club Pyramids FC, surrendering their 2-1 lead after conceding two late goals that broke the Buccaneers’ hearts.

Coach Jose Riveiro has since come under heavy criticism following his attack-minded substitutions which later led to Pyramids FC scoring twice afterwards. However, Riveiro must now switch his focus to finishing the Betway Premiership in search of Mamelodi Sundowns and adding to the club’s trophy cabinet in their Nedbank Cup final clash against Kaizer Chiefs.

Prior to their midweek game against high-flying Sekhukhune United, Orlando Pirates were unbeaten in four Betway Premiership matches. They shared the spoils in a goalless draw with Stellenbosch FC while overcoming Chippa United (0-1), Mamelodi Sundowns (2-1), and Polokwane City (0-1) to claim maximum points.

Away from the Orlando Stadium, the Buccaneers have kept three consecutive clean sheets in the Betway Premiership against Chippa United, Stellenbosch FC and Polokwane City.

During their last league visit to the FNB Stadium, Orlando Pirates were victorious, courtesy of an Evidence Makgopa goal, with goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi keeping a clean sheet. Meanwhile, Sipho Chaine tallied another clean sheet when these teams faced off at the Orlando Stadium earlier this season as Patrick ‘Tito’ Maswanganyi ensured the Buccaneers claimed maximum points from the penalty spot in injury time with a cheeky Panenka.

If you’re searching for a negative, it would possibly be Orlando Pirates scoring just three goals from their last five away matches with two of those goals being scored by central defender Nkosinathi Sibisi.

Coach Jose Riveiro suffered two losses during his first two Soweto Derbies against Kaizer Chiefs but has since gone on to convincingly win his next four matches against Amakhosi. Last month, prior to the CAF Champions League knockout stages, the Spanish manager announced that he would be stepping down as Orlando Pirates coach come the end of the season.

Riveiro has taken this team from strength to strength, uncovering numerous young gems that will serve South African football in the upcoming generation.

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH

  • Relebohile Mofokeng: The exciting 20-year-old has tallied four assists and scored five goals in the Betway Premiership, making him the club’s top contributor. His clinical finishing was highlighted after scoring two goals from two chances against Mamelodi Sundowns and will definitely be on the radar for Kaizer Chiefs’ scouting report.
  • Mohau Nkota: The other outstanding young talent in Orlando Pirates’ frontline, Nkota displayed his calmness under pressure, handing the Buccaneers the lead away against Pyramids FC and scoring the matchwinner away at Algerian champions MC Alger (0-1). A player for the big occasion, expect Nkota to turn on the flair.
  • Mbekezeli Mbokazi: The powerful central defender has injected confidence into the Orlando Pirates backline since making his mark with a goal in the Nedbank Cup victory against SuperSport United. Quick across the ground, excellent in aerial duels and very comfortable in possession, Mbokazi has all the hallmarks of a great defender. Possibly the best to don the famous black and white since legendary defender Mbulelo Mabizela.

ORLANDO PIRATES TEAM NEWS

Defender Thabiso Monyane reportedly reinjured his hamstring in a friendly match, lengthening his spell on the sidelines, while Nigerian centre-back Olisa Ndah sustained a stress fracture after landing awkwardly, also during a friendly match.

Long-term absentee Thabiso Sesane continues to undergo rehabilitation after his successful surgery, with Thabiso Lebitso further along in the same process. Lebitso is expected to return at the end of the month, while Sesane will miss the remainder of the season.

Bafana Bafana forward Zakhele Lepasa has resumed with first-team training sessions but is still being eased into action, while the mystery of why Monnapule Saleng is not featuring for the club despite being fully fit continues.

Saleng has been spotted training with the first team ahead of their previous Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League matches but ultimately never travelled with the team. A fantastic player who would be excellent together with the likes of Mofokeng and Nkota.

  2. Orlando Pirates Total 1.5 Goals: Orlando Pirates to score two goals seems the best bet seeing as Kaizer Chiefs' defence is hit heavily with injuries. (107/100 with Betway) (108/100 with Hollywoodbets) (107/100 with Supabets)

  3. Orlando Pirates To Score In Both Halves: Going ahead with the same reasoning but carrying more risk, this option offers plenty of value. Take Orlando Pirates to capitalize on Kaizer Chiefs’ defensive fragilities. 144/100 with Betway) (145/100 with Hollywoodbets) (143/100 with Supabets)

  3. Orlando Pirates To Win Both Halves: With the most profit in mind, we come across this option needing Orlando Pirates to win both halves. Carrying the highest risk factor, this bet is for those who have full confidence in the Buccaneers. (350/100 with Betway) (349/100 with Hollywoodbets) (351/100 with Supabets)

PREDICTION: ORLANDO PIRATES TO WIN

Kaizer Chiefs are not in the best shape at the moment, suffering a host of injuries to many first-choice defenders, while they have also found goals hard to come by.

On the other hand, Orlando Pirates have the firepower of 20-year-old duo Mofokeng and Nkota to find the back of the net, while goalkeeper Sipho              Chaine is well protected by the likes of Mbokazi and company.

Coach Jose Riveiro has won four consecutive matches against Kaizer Chiefs and on current form, we simply cannot see Amakhosi upsetting the apple cart. All indications point towards an Orlando Pirates victory at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
