Orlando Pirates Current Form – DWWDW
Orlando Pirates have mounted a challenge to Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance this season, although their chances to dethrone the reigning champions are running out.
The Buccaneers moved back to the top of the Premiership table with a convincing 3-0 win over AmaZulu on April 18, although Masandawana have two games left to play.
Pirates' opportunities to keep on ahead of Sundowns took a big knock on April 10, when they were held to a 2-2 draw with Richards Bay FC at the uMhlathuze Stadium.
The week before, the Buccaneers demolished Lamontville Golden Arrows 5-0 at the Orlando Stadium, with Oswin Appollis and Relebohile Mofokeng both scoring braces.
Showing their championship mettle before the March international break, Pirates dismantled the struggling TS Galaxy 6-0, with Mofokeng sealing a treble in the second half.
In a result that underscored the strong yet inconsistent form that opened the door for Sundowns, the Soweto giants played to a 1-1 draw against Siwelele one week earlier.
Pirates would be confident heading into the clash with Kaizer Chiefs, having defeated their rivals 3-0 at the FNB Stadium in the first Soweto Derby fixture of the campaign.

Key Players to Watch
- Relebohile Mofokeng: Still leading the overall scoring chart and combined goals-assists, the midfielder has been in prolific form this season. While he still needs to translate that form to Bafana Bafana, he continues to lead the Orlando Pirates attack and will need to be sharp against a hungry Kaizer Chiefs.
- Patrick Maswanganyi: His Buccaneers teammate might be top of the pops, but the midfielder has a greater scoring frequency, netting every 161 minutes on average, according to Sofascore statistics. Maswanganyi has six goals and one assist this season, but would be frustrated at few returns from many big chances created.
- Dean Hotto: Pirates have only conceded 11 times this season, with their strong attacking line balanced well by a solid defensive structure. Hotto has been a key playmaker with eight assists and one goal of his own, as well as decent stats in clearances per game and tackles per game.

Midfielder Sihle Nduli remains sidelined and will miss the remainder of the season, and defender Tapelo Xoki is also unlikely to feature again in this campaign. Thabiso Sesane is also still working back to fitness.
Kaizer Chiefs Current Form – WWWWD
Kaizer Chiefs have been knocking at the door all season, having recently claimed the continental spot from AmaZulu and looking to perhaps chase down Pirates.
However, the odds of that happening suffered a major blow on April 18, when the resurgent AmaKhosi were held to a goalless draw away against Polokwane City FC.
A few days earlier, Chiefs thumped Magesi FC 4-1 in the same city, as the Limpopo-based side continued to battle against the reality of a drop to the National First Division.
Then, on April 12, the AmaKhosi made the situation more tricky for TS Galaxy at the FNB Stadium, strengthening their position over AmaZulu with one game in hand.
In the first match after the March international break, Chiefs defeated Orbit College FC 3-1 in Gqeberha, rebounding after a 22nd-minute goal by Orbit’s Mbulelo Wagaba.
While their end-of-season period is more congested, and with a match against Siwelele to play after a postponement, the Soweto titans would be positive about the season.
If Pirates continue to record draws, and Chiefs can get revenge in the upcoming derby clash, they would be realistically looking at the possibility of moving up into second.

Key Players to Watch
- Flavio Silva: Still leading the way with combined goals and assists, the Guinea-Bissau forward has picked up the pace in Chiefs’ recent games. Silva’s scoring and playmaking are even more impressive considering he has only made nine starts in 16 appearances, having found the back of the net seven times.
- Inacio Miguel Ferreira Santos: Similar to their Soweto rivals, the AmaKhosi have relied on attacking power and defensive lines this season, with the Angolan defender playing a key role. Making 17 starts in 17 matches, Santos is leading the way in clearances, balls recovered, and shutting down opposition attackers.
- Mduduzi Shabalala: The midfielder has been a consistent playmaker for Chiefs as they continue to scale the South African Premiership standings. With the most big chances created, and with five goals and three assists to his name, Shabalala could make the difference in the upcoming high-stakes Soweto Derby clash.
Kaizer Chiefs News
Having struggled with multiple injuries this season, Zitha Kwinika and Nkanyiso Shinga remain out for the remainder of the season. Coach Khalil Ben Youssef continues to rotate the squad, with Rushwin Dortley working back to fitness.

Suggested Bets
Affiliate bookmakers have updated Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs betting odds ahead of the derby clash.
Under 3.5 Goals: The Soweto Derby tends to be a closely-contested and tactical clash, and the strong form of both Pirates and Chiefs this season lend to the prediction of a low-scoring and narrow match.
Both Teams to Score - No: In their derby clash earlier this year, the AmaKhosi were unable to breach the Sea Robbers’ defences. With the additional pressure at the Orlando Stadium, the visitors could go goalless again.
Value Bets
Read on for the latest updates on soccer betting sites in South Africa as the Soweto rivals go head-to-head.
Anytime Goal Scorer - Appollis: The superstar midfielder has scored in three of Pirates’ last five games, and is capable of exploiting any lapses by Chiefs to drive the home team’s advantage.
Correct Score - 2-0: The Buccaneers have consistently scored above two goals in four out of five recent games, and have the head-to-head edge from the win over the AmaKhosi in February this year.
Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs Prediction: Home Team Wins
Pirates and Chiefs have both enjoyed strong campaigns, with the home team performing better in terms of goal difference and their place on the table.
However, as reflected with reliable bookmakers for betting, derby matches are typically difficult to call, and can often result in unpredictable outcomes.
With that said, Pirates have shown the capability and have the home advantage to defeat Chiefs, keeping the hope of unseating Sundowns alive.
