When Proteas wicket-keeper batter Quinton de Kock announced his return to international cricket, having retired in 2023, the news was met with excitement for a host of different reasons.
One of those reasons was that the experienced player could perhaps give back to South African cricket and the system that afforded him with the opportunities to reach the heights he has reached in his career thus far.
Sources say De Kock won’t feature for Lions
However, thus far, the player is yet to feature for his domestic team, the Johannesburg-based Lions, and SportsBoom have exclusively been told that De Kock has very little interest in playing domestic cricket.
It is shocking news, given that the 34-year-old had international players such as Neil McKenzie and Alviro Petersen in the Lions squad when he first came onto the domestic cricket scene.
However, De Kock is operating well within his rights because, at the end of the day, he does not have a national contract with Cricket South Africa like many of the Proteas players and is a free agent.
Players who are contracted by Cricket South Africa are obligated to play domestic cricket, hence we see the likes of Rassie van der Dussen still turning out for the Lions.
A player of the calibre of De Kock could impart invaluable knowledge to the up-and-coming youngsters, such as Khaya Fakude, Connor Esterhuizen and Richard Seletswane in the Lions set-up, quite like the likes of McKenzie and Petersen did to him when he was a youngster.
Yes, De Kock plays in the SA20, where he gets to engage with young South African cricketers. However, it is just not the same, because neither Seletswane nor Fakude are involved in the SA20, and so are many youngsters who are yet to earn an SA20 contract.
In an era where the talent that comes out of South Africa is said to be less skilled than the past generations, one can only wonder how this generation can maintain the standards of the Proteas if the likes of De Kock distance themselves from domestic cricket.
In India, the likes of Virat Kohli still play domestic cricket, despite being one of the most decorated players of this generation.
