Proteas fast bowler Gerald Coetzee expressed excitement to work with Lions coaches, including legendary fast bowler Allan Donald, to try and get back to the national team after missing out on the 2026/27 national contracts.
The 25-year-old looks to be fit for the upcoming summer, which will see Australia and England tour South Africa.
The Return
Proteas fast bowler Gerald Coetzee missed out on the recently announced Cricket South Africa central contracts, but was included in the Players of national interest list.
With Australia and England touring South Africa next summer, the 25-year-old is determined to get back in the mix after missing out on numerous tours in the recent past.
Despite being in the Proteas’ most recent tour of New Zealand, Coetzee is not anywhere near where he was a couple of years ago, when he dominated the world’s best batters in the 2023 ICC World Cup in India.
Not only has he not been close to his best with regard to form, but also in terms of the pecking order in the national side.
However, at least the fast bowler is injury-free and is not in the Indian Premier League this season, meaning he can use the winter to get stronger and try to get back to his best and in the national side across the formats.
The right-arm quick wants to take his time, work on his body and put himself in the best possible position to earn a spot in the Proteas squads that will face Australia in three Tests and England in a multi-format tour.
“I think you've got to take it one step at a time and just look after my body, which is always the biggest challenge for people who bowl fast,” Coetzee told SportsBoom.co.za in an exclusive interview.
“It's definitely my goal to play, hopefully, in every one of those series, but I can't control that. So, the main focus is just to up skill, get better and stay fit."
“I’m not injured. I've been playing since SA20. So, currently I’m just preparing for whatever's next, whichever opportunity arises next."
“But right now I'm strong and fit, working with good people, with good trainers, good physios. It's an everyday, full-time job to look after your body. But at the moment, it's all going well and God willing, it'll keep going well.”
Working With Donald
Coetzee has recently joined the Lions from the Titans, a move that the fast bowler has described as purely a career move. The 25-year-old will now work with Lions head coach Russell Domingo, bowling coach Allan Donald and batting coach Hashim Amla, all of whom are highly respected around the world.
For a fast bowler with big ambitions, Coetzee will be in good hands given the experience of the backroom staff at the Lions. Coetzee expressed his excitement to work with Domingo, Donald and the rest of the Lions staff as he carves a path back to his absolute best with a big summer ahead.
“I was just trying to make a good career decision to see where I can move, if I had to move, or stay. So, it was just a few questions I had to ask myself, and I think the Lions have a great environment,” said Coetzee.
“I think they have done really well, and they've got a really incredible management team all the way from the top to the coaches and incredible facilities."
“So, I think for a career move for cricket, it's an incredible move to work with guys like Russell and Allan. I'm very excited to move there and sad to leave the Titans as well at the same time.”
