It has been a whirlwind period for former Titans seamer Lizaad Williams, who has officially joined Boland after missing out on a Cricket South Africa (CSA) national contract for the 2026/27 season.
Williams’ move marks a homecoming of sorts, as the fast bowler returns to the region where his cricket journey began.
“I’ve always wanted to move back home and I did inform the Titans about my intentions… even last season. I’m originally from the Boland region,” Williams told SportsBoom.co.za, in an exclusive interview.
The decision ultimately came down to Boland and Western Province cricket team, with family playing a central role.
“For me it was an option between Boland and [Western] Province, just to be closer to home. My wife sacrificed a lot to make my dreams a possibility. We wanted my wife to chase her dreams as well.”
Leaving the Titans
Williams brings the curtain down on a six-year spell with the Titans, a period that proved pivotal in his rise to international cricket with the South Africa national cricket team.
“I have been six years at the Titans and only have high praise for the franchise. They gave me a chance to grow and play on a regular basis, which enabled me to chase my lifelong dream to represent the Proteas.”
Despite his appreciation, the move always felt inevitable.
“They are a well-run organisation and very professional. I’m sad to leave, but Gauteng was always a means to an end for me. I never saw myself living there long-term, and I felt it was the right time to move.”
No CSA National Contract Extension
Williams’ transition comes in the same week CSA confirmed its national contracts for the upcoming season, with the seamer notably absent after being contracted the previous year.
The announcement sparked broader discussion around communication between CSA and players, with some reporting a lack of clarity from coaching staff.
Williams, however, confirmed he was informed.
“I had a big operation in October 2024 and since then my form has fluctuated too much. That had a big role in me losing out on my CSA contract.”
“They did contact me that I won’t be having another contract. Obviously it’s not nice and you don’t wish for it to happen to anyone.”
Proteas Fire Still Burning?
At 32, and with 2 Tests, 8 ODIs, and 20 T20Is under his belt, questions naturally arise about whether Williams’ international career has reached its conclusion.
But the hunger remains.
“I still have the ambition to play for the Proteas, although I know at this stage of my career it might be a far shout. But I’m going to give it my all… that I can promise.”
Still, his priorities are evolving beyond cricket.
“If it doesn’t happen, then it doesn’t happen. I want my wife to chase her dreams, my kids to be closer to their grandparents, and to set my life up for after cricket," he concluded.
