Proteas Test and ODI captain Temba Bavuma is set to feature in the European T20 Premier League in Belgium during the South African cricket offseason, marking a rare appearance for the skipper in the shortest format of the game.

The move may come as a surprise to some cricket followers, given Bavuma’s limited involvement in T20 cricket in recent years. However, the South African captain clarified that the opportunity does not interfere with his national commitments and remains secondary to his responsibilities with the Proteas.

“It is the offseason for me,” Bavuma explained.

“Since it does not clash with any ODI or Test commitments, I’m happy to indulge. My priority will always be Test and ODI cricket for as long as I hold the responsibility of captain.”

Ghent Gladiators & Big Names

Bavuma will represent Ghent Gladiators alongside fellow South Africans Duan Jansen and Dwaine Pretorius. The side will be coached by former England international Jonathan Trott, adding further international experience to the setup.

The tournament is expected to feature several global stars, including former England batter James Vince, giving Bavuma the chance to compete alongside and against experienced T20 players.

“It is always good experience to share knowledge with other experienced players,” Bavuma told SportsBoom.co.za in an exclusive interaction.

“It will be nice to share the field with guys I haven’t played with in a while like Dwaine Pretorius. I’m also looking forward to working with Jonathan Trott.”

Bavuma’s appearance in the Belgium-based league comes after an extended absence from top-level T20 cricket. Having not featured regularly in the Proteas T20 side or SA20 competition, questions had emerged around his future in the format.

Personal Motivation

Despite that, the 34-year-old sees the competition as an opportunity to rediscover his rhythm and simply enjoy playing cricket again.

“I have no objectives in the Belgium T20 League,” he said.

“I just want to go out there and have fun. I haven’t played a great amount of T20 lately, so it will be nice to see myself do well within the format.”

For Bavuma, the tournament represents more than just another cricket assignment, it is a chance to return to the field, embrace a different environment, and continue growing his game while maintaining his commitment to South African cricket.
