Exclusive: Russell Domingo Reflects on Markram’s Record SA20 Exit and Backs Stubbs as New Sunrisers Captain
Aiden Markram has made a record-breaking switch to the Durban Super Giants, leaving a void at Sunrisers. Coach Domingo praises Markram's leadership but welcomes a squad focused on local talent and international firepower. Tristan Stubbs takes over as captain, while the King brothers join the team.
Current SEC Captain Tristan Stubbs and former captain Aiden Markram in action for Sunrisers Eastern Cape
In one of the most high-profile moves of the SA20 Auction, Aiden Markram has made a stunning switch from defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the Durban Super Giants, fetching a record-breaking R14 million price tag.
For a moment this was the highest ever in SA20 history, before being surpassed by Dewald Brevis a few minutes later. His departure leaves a notable void, both as a batter and as captain, but the Sunrisers have wasted no time in naming Tristan Stubbs as his successor.
Markram’s Exit Marks End of an Era
Markram's exit comes after two strong seasons leading the Sunrisers, including their back-to-back title wins.
Coach Russell Domingo expressed heartfelt sentiments on losing his former skipper.
“It is very painful to lose a player like Aiden Markram. We tried by all means to keep him... obviously within our budget. R14 million was just out of our reach,” Domingo told SportsBoom.co.za.
“He has been an amazing leader and will be sorely missed. But the game must go on, and I believe we’ve built a strong squad regardless.”
Local Flavour Key to Squad Strategy
A clear trend from the Sunrisers' auction strategy was their emphasis on homegrown talent.
Of the squad assembled, eight players currently represent the Warriors, with Marco Jansen and Anrich Nortje both former Warriors also returning to play in Gqeberha. That makes a total of 10 players familiar with the St George’s Park conditions, a move that could pay dividends.
“We tried to get as many locally based players with some outside flavour,” Domingo explained.
“This approach has worked for us before. We’re really happy with the balance in the squad.”
International Firepower Adds Depth
Sunrisers have also brought in several key overseas names.
English players Lewis Gregory and James Coles, both with standout performances in the County Championship, were hand-picked, aided by assistant coach Adrian Birrell's deep ties to English cricket.
Mystery spinner Ghazanfar adds a wildcard element to the bowling attack, while seasoned internationals like Quinton de Kock, Jonny Bairstow, and new captain Tristan Stubbs bring heavyweight experience to the team.
"We got some really good English players, Adrian Birrell [Head Coach] knows them really well from the County Cricket. [Lewis] Gregory and [James] Coles had really good performances in the County Championship."
"[AM] Ghazanfar will bring in the x-factor who is a mystery spinner. And obviously we can't leave out the big players in Quinton de Kock, Tristan Stubbs and a Jonny Bairstow...we got a well rounded team with experienced players and youth as well."
Stubbs Takes the Helm
With Markram gone, the captaincy baton passes to Tristan Stubbs, a player Domingo believes embodies the Sunrisers ethos.
“Yes, Stubbs will be captain! He is extremely passionate about this team. He’s led before with the Warriors and elsewhere, and he’s a fantastic leader,” Domingo said.
“He loves playing for this team, and I have no doubt he’ll do a great job.”
Family Ties: King Brothers Reunite
Adding a personal touch to this season’s squad is the inclusion of CJ and JP King, siblings who both play domestic cricket for the Warriors.
The Johannesburg-born duo will now reunite under the Sunrisers banner.
“They’re Jo’burg boys,” Domingo chuckled.
"But both have grown within the Warriors setup. They’re exciting young talents with huge potential. I’m looking forward to working with them.”
