Once hailed as the next Graeme Smith, Aiden Markram’s cricketing career has been anything but straightforward.

The Proteas batter, whose leadership and classical technique once promised a golden path, has had to fight through form slumps, criticism, and omission from the national side. But now, after playing one of the greatest Test innings by a South African in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia at Lord’s, Markram has etched his place in history.

From Golden Boy to Battler

Markram burst onto the scene with a dream trajectory, captaining South Africa to victory at the 2014 U19 World Cup alongside Kagiso Rabada.

His elegant stroke play and calm demeanour quickly elevated him as a future leader. But as international cricket often reminds even its brightest talents, consistency at the top is hard-earned.

He endured a slump that saw him dropped from the national side, notably missing out during South Africa's previous Test series against Australia. Yet, he clawed his way back—humbly, patiently, and relentlessly.

"You get used to the flak [from critics], to be fair," Markram reflected.

"To be a batter at this level, you fail more than you succeed. People always have opinions and they are entitled to those opinions. It’s on us as players not to pay too much attention to those things."

His answer wasn’t in words, but in weighty performances. Most notably his gritty century in the WTC Final, helping guide South Africa to their first ICC trophy in 27 years.

"In terms of putting on a performance, it takes a combination of many things. The people we’re playing for, the incredible group of guys here, the hours behind the scenes. When you get an opportunity to leave a mark, you’ve got to make it count," Markram told SportsBoom.co.za.

WTC Champions Set for Big Home Tests

Fresh off the triumph at Lord’s, South Africa now shifts its focus to the new WTC cycle. The ICC has released the next schedule, and the Proteas are set to host both Australia and England, two members of the traditional "Big Three" on home soil.

For Markram, it’s an exciting prospect.

“I actually haven’t seen the schedule yet,” he admitted with a laugh, “but it’ll be great! It’s summer back home, the locals will come out in numbers, a couple of beers in the sunshine and cricket. What more do you want?”

With Australia seeking redemption and England aiming to make a statement after recent setbacks, the stage is set for two blockbuster Test series.

Test Cricket: Reignited by the WTC?

As global cricket continues to lean into shorter formats and lucrative T20 leagues, questions have lingered about the future of Test cricket. But if the WTC Final was any indication, there’s life and passion, yet in the longest format.

“It certainly felt like Test cricket was reignited,” Markram said.

“There was a massive turnout at the stadium, and everything that happened behind the scenes… People still love Test cricket."

"For someone maybe on the fence, or drifting from the format, a spectacle like the WTC Final may have brought them back. I hope it’s that way for our young players coming through, it’s still the ultimate challenge.”

A Leader by Example

While Bavuma captains the Test side, Markram’s influence is undeniable. A seasoned batter, a resilient fighter, and now a key architect of South Africa’s Test resurgence, his journey stands as a lesson in patience and perseverance.

From youth prodigy to Mace winner, Aiden Markram is no longer just a player with potential, he’s become a cornerstone of South African cricket’s new golden era.
