Nigerian goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is set for a permanent transfer from Wrexham AFC this summer as the Championship club stalls extension talks.

SportsBoom understands that Okonkwo’s representatives are actively considering offers from Championship clubs while Wrexham are in talks to sign a new goalkeeper, with Sunderland’s Anthony Peterson the top priority.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper is not short of suitors, and his proven experience in English football makes him a target for a number of clubs in the second tier.

Okonkwo, who moved to Wrexham in 2024, enters the final 12 months of his contract this June, and the club have yet to take any steps to secure his future.

The 24-year-old, who rose through the ranks at Arsenal, played a major role in Wrexham’s impressive Championship run last season as they finished seventh in the table.

He played a majority of the Reds’ games in the 2025-26 season with over 40 appearances across all competitions.

Additionally, Wrexham are clearly gearing up for a full squad revamp this summer, with plans already in motion to strengthen in attack as they target League One top scorer Dominic Ballard from Leyton Orient.

NIGERIA DEBUT RAISES OKONKWO’S STOCK

The former England youth international has made a great start to a likely busy summer by making his senior international debut for Nigeria.

He played Nigeria’s two games at the 2026 Unity Cup and kept back-to-back clean sheets against Zimbabwe and Jamaica as the Super Eagles came out on top in Charlton.

Okonkwo’s international exposure with Nigeria has raised his value with more eyes on him, and he will now be interested in securing regular first-team action to keep himself in Eric Chelle’s selection.

He was an unused substitute in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw against Poland on Wednesday, and he would continue training with Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho as the Super Eagles prepare to face Portugal in their final pre-World Cup friendly game on June 10.
