Sources close to SportsBoom confirmed that the reports on AS Monaco showing interest in 21-year-old Relebohile Mofokeng are indeed true, as the demand for South African talent abroad increases.
Over the last couple of years, scouts from teams all around the world have been deployed to the South African shores to keep an eye out for the rising talent.
As a result, 11 of the 23-player squad that Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos selected for the two friendly matches against Panama, where Bafana drew 1-1 in Durban and lost 2-1 in Cape Town, play overseas.
Notably, striker Lyle Forster plays for Burnley in the English Premier League, while Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Chicao Fire) and Bongokuhle Hlongwane (Minnesota United) apply their trade in the USA's Major League Soccer.
South Africa to Monaco?
SportsBoom.co.za has learned that Orlando Pirates' 21-year-old superstar, Mofokeng, could be the latest addition to the overseas players, as French giants AS Monaco have expressed interest.
AS Monaco joins a long list of overseas teams that have expressed interest in Mofokeng, as the young attacker's talents have drawn attention worldwide.
Even Panama's head coach, Thomas Christiansen, having witnessed Mofokeng's brilliance against his own team this week, hailed the youngster.
"Mofokeng is a very good player. He can make a difference. He's fast, technically skilled and very strong," Christiansen told the media in Cape Town on Tuesday.
"He can give good passes, and as a young player, he's very important for the future."
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup about 70 odd days away, where South Africa and Mexico will take the field for the tournament opener, there could be bigger teams after the youngster's signature, given that the next transfer window is in July.
