Sources have revealed to SportsBoom.co.za that Kaizer Chiefs have entered the race to secure the services of top striker Peter Shalulile, as the newly appointed coach, Fernando Da Cruz, looks to strengthen his options in front of goal.
Chiefs After Shalulile
With Kaizer Chiefs having appointed new coach Fernando Da Cruz following the departures of co-coaches Cedric Kaze (Sekhukhune United) and Ben Khalil Youssef (Durban City), the Amakhosi look to further increase their odds of competing with dominant teams Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns next season.
The Soweto Giants are looking to add firepower and experience in their forwards, and SportsBoom has learned that the Amakhosi have joined the race to sign Shalulile.
The experienced striker, alongside the likes of Khanyisa Mayo, who is reportedly set to remain in Naturena and not return to Algeria, will form quite the deadly duo in front of goal and a terror for opposition defenders.
Given that Kaizer Chiefs are looking to return to their glory days, securing Shalulile's signature would certainly be a step in the right direction, given the experience the striker would bring.
The potential signing of Shalulile could help restore the fear factor that Chiefs have lacked in recent seasons, bringing proven goalscoring ability, a winning mentality and the kind of star quality capable of inspiring the club back towards title contention.
Shalulile Situation At Sundowns
Shalulile finds himself at a crossroads at Mamelodi Sundowns. After six years with the Tshwane-based team, Shalulile's situation is uncertain at Sundowns, with his contract set to expire this month.
The Namibian international has done it all at Sundowns, winning multiple league titles, and most recently the CAF African Champions League, the most prestigious trophy on the African continent.
The 32-year-old has enjoyed plenty of individual success, breaking records as a striker. He currently sits with 130 goals in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), the most by any player in the PSL era, surpassing legendary South African striker Siyabonga Nomvethe's tally of 129.
Despite all the memories at Sundowns and achievements, Shalulile found himself being benched for the most part of the recently concluded 2025/26 season with coach Miguel Cardoso at the helm.
For any striker with the CV that Shalulile possesses, sitting on the bench while injury-free would be a hard pill to swallow.
It is believed to be this reason that the Namibian international is yet to extend his contract with Sundowns, as he is seeking security in terms of minutes spent on the park.
Editor's Insight
Chiefs are in the mix, but Sundowns still have leverage if they act quickly. However, Shalulile’s need for regular minutes makes a departure likely, with a free transfer attracting strong interest. Slight betting edge: a move away from Chloorkop looks more probable than staying, but this one could swing late in the window.
